Bacteria shows promise against salmonella
Naturally occurring bacteria can be used to kill salmonella and other pathogens in food, American microbiologist, says.
Eric Brown and others microbiologist at the U. S. Food and Drug Administration experimenting naturally "good" bacteria that can kill bacteria "wrong on fruits and vegetables, the Washington Post reported Saturday.
"The best thing is that we are taking something living and organic, and it's new in the field and, as such, it will kill other bacteria. We are just on the edge of it, "said Brown, who presented his findings this month at an International Conference Salmonella in France.
Brown and his team have worked with over 300 species of plants against bacteria isolated five "good" bacteria effective against salmonella. These five types of bacteria do not seem to be harmful to humans, however, requires further investigation, Brown said.
Salmonella, a major cause of food poisoning, kills more than 500 people sick, and estimated at 1.4 million per year in the United States.
